Last season Assumption’s basketball team got used to playing opponents that use a zone defense to force them to shoot from the outside.
But that wasn’t the case Tuesday night, when the Rockets defeated visiting Notre Dame 55-40 in the season opener for both teams. The Pandas were last season’s state runners-up.
“We suspect that most teams would be pressing us, getting turnovers and not letting the game stay in half court,” said Assumption head coach Steve Small, who has four new starters this season.
The Pandas emphasized a man-to-man defense. They double- and sometimes triple-teamed Nora Kiesler but couldn’t stop the 6-foot-6 center, who scored a game-high 23 points and grabbed 19 rebounds.
