St. Gabriel seemed poised to pull out its second straight 5th & 6th grade Class AAA Toy Bowl title in more dramatic fashion on Saturday afternoon, but it was eventually Holy Trinity that would cling to its lead and pick up the triple-A championship with a thrilling 22-21 decision over the Leopards at St. Xavier High School.
One year ago, St. Gabriel won the tournament title in seven OTs. This year's game ultimately came down to an attempted two-point kick attempt with 1:57 to go that proved to be the difference in the Eagles victory.
St. Gabriel recovered its own kickoff to open the game when Holy Trinity couldn't get to the bouncing ball fast enough, allowing Leopards’ Douglas Timmering to recover it. The lightning-fast turnover led directly to Jared Coffman's 8-yard touchdown run up the left sideline, a Brady McCauley kick and an early 8-0 lead for the Leopards.
Holy Trinity had an answer though, and on the Eagles' first play from scrimmage, running back Will Ginter broke off a 36-yard touchdown run to cut St. Gabriel's lead to 8-6 with 5:47 left in first quarter. The two-point lead for the Leopards remained in tact after Holy Trinity's kick was no good.
The Eagles kept the momentum when St. Gabriel's Andrew Littlefield’s punt attempt at the 3:51 mark in the first quarter bounced off a teammate and Holy Trinity recovered at the St. Gabriel 22-yard line. Just over two minutes later, Ginter would notch his second TD of the first quarter on a 9-yard run to give his team a 12-8 lead.
Ginter completed the scoring play by taking and making the two-point kick, which put Holy Trinity ahead 14-8.
Not to be outdone, Coffman scored his second TD of the game on a 3-yard run that tied the game at 14-14. St. Gabriel lined up to attempt the kick, but the Leopard holder Littlefield took the snap, bounced up to his feet and ran around the right side for the one-point conversion, putting Gabriel ahead 15-14 with 4:00 to go in first half.
The score remained 15-14 in favor of St. Gabriel through hafltime until Eagles RB Ginter picked up a big first down down to the Leopards' 1-yard line on a 4th & 4 with 1:30 to go in third quarter. The conversion eventually led to Adam Weining’s keeper and 1-yard touchdown run to give Holy Trinity a 20-15 lead.
Ginter knocked down his second, two-point kick of the game to extend the Eagle lead to 22-15.
St. Gabriel would not go away and Littlefield got involved again, as the versatile player recovered a fumble at the Holy Trinity 25-yard line with 5:34 to go in the game and Gabriel trailing by 9 points, but the Leopards proceeded to turn the ball over on downs on its next possession and 4:04 left in the contest.
The Leopards would get the ball back yet again and would not squander its opportunity this time, as Coffman’s third rushing touchdown of the game - a rousing 24-yard scamper - cut Holy Trinity’s lead to 22-21. St. Gabriel elected to attempt the two-point kick, which was on line, but ended up falling short and dropping just beneath the goalpost crossbar.
St. Gabriel managed to get the ball back one last time after stopping the Eagles on a 4th & 2 with 58.5 seconds remaining, but the Leopards faltered on four straight plays and Holy Trinity was able to run out the clock to clinch the win in this exciting Saturday finale.
