Trinity senior named Kentucky Player of the Year

Rising to the occasion all year long, as Trinity High School was piecing together the basketball program's most successful season of all time, was Shamrock senior and Boston University signee Nathan Dieudonne.

On Thursday, the 6-foot-7 forward continued to be recognized for his achievements by being named the 2012 Gatorade Kentucky boys' Player of the Year.

Dieudonne amassed 12 points, 12 rebounds and two blocks in the 71-53, title-clinching victory against Scott County this past Saturday and led Trinity to its first-ever state basketball championship in the process. He averaged 14.0 points, 6.7 rebounds, 1.4 steals and 1.3 assists per game this season and shot 57.8 percent from the field, 38.5 percent from 3-point range and 79.4 percent from the free throw line.

In the classroom, Dieudonne has maintained a B average and donates his time as a youth basketball instructor, has volunteered on behalf of his church, participated in Habitat for Humanity and is a member of Trinity’s Green Cross service-oriented club.

“He’s one of the hardest-working players I’ve had in the last three years,” said Ray Valentine, Director of Basketball Operations for Dieudonne’s KYA All-Stars Amateur Athletic Union team. “He’s relentless. He’s a very coachable young man, and his upside is tremendous because he plays so hard and is so passionate about the game. He’s a great teammate. He continues to get better. The way he ended the season, he showed in the state tournament he was the best player in the state. He really persevered.”

Dieudonne will play for the Boston Terriers in the NCAA D-I America East Conference next season. He is one of three Trinity seniors from this year's team to have signed National Letters of Intent with college basketball teams for 2012-13.

Gatorade selects a player of the year from each state. A dedicated ESPNHS team managed the Gatorade Boys Basketball Player of the Year selection process, resulting in winners based on the program's three pillars: athletic production and impact in the 2011 season, high academic achievement and exemplary personal character.
