Mercy Dealt First Loss During Spring Break
Jags begin four-game Florida span against Tate High
Mercy Academy, ranked No. 17 in the most recent National Fastpich Coaches Assocation high school softball poll, kicked off Spring Break action in Florida on Tuesday.
And the Jaguars were not so pleasantly welcomed by its first Sunshine State host.
Coming off a third-place finish in the Kissimmee Klassic over the weekend, Tate High School (15-8) continued its strong play on Tuesday and topped Mercy 10-0 in five innings. Lady Aggie Rachel Dunsford earned her fifth win of the season and piled up 4 RBI at the plate to lead Tate to the win.
Marina Cobbs had a pair of hits in the game and scored three runs.
It was the first loss of the season for the Jags, which had started the 2012 season with 13 straight wins. Against Tate, Mercy came up with just three total hits; senior JJ Francis, junior Aubrey Meiners and freshman Jordan Vorbrink each went 1-for-2 at the plate.
Mercy is in action again today against Escambia County and then will play at Niceville on Thursday, the team currently ranked No. 3 nationally by the NFCA. The Jaguars wrap up its Florida road trip on Friday with a fourth and final game against Fort Walton Beach.
The Jags (13-1), which hold a No. 3 ranking statewide in the Kentucky Prep Top 25, are still unbeaten against in-state competition this year and will return to action against Kentucky foes on April 17 when Mercy travels to Central Hardin (13-5).
