Twelve varsity lacrosse teams comprise tournament field

The 6th annual BraveHeart Girls' Lacrosse Tournament kicks off today and will conclude on Sunday afternoon with a pair of division championship games. 

Hosted by Sacred Heart Academy, this four-day LAX event will feature two divisions, four pools and 12 total teams on the varsity level that will compete on two fields in the pool play tournament on the campus of SHA.

The participating varsity schools are:

VARSITY BLUE DIVISION

• Pool 1: Sacred Heart, Ballard, Male
• Pool 2: Bishop Chatard (IN), Assumption, Christian Academy

VARSITY RED DIVISION

• Pool 1: Eastern, Rebel Hawks, Martha Layne Collins
• Pool 2: Mercy, Oldham County, Scott County

Brandon Davis, head coach of the host Valkyries who was named 2011 Coach of the Year after leading his team to the program's first-ever state championship last season, says he is looking forward to hosting teams from outside of Louisville. 

"We see the sport of girls’ lacrosse growing, and the high caliber of competition each year makes each team and the sport stronger" Davis said. 

The tournament's two-time defending champion, Kentucky Country Day, is not participating this year which means a new winner will be crowned on Sunday. The past champions have included KCD (2010 and 2011), Manual (2009), Ballard (2008) and Mercy Academy (2007).  The varsity schedule is currently set as follows:

THURSDAY, APRIL 19

• Eastern vs. Rebel Hawks; 5pm @ Horton Field
• Sacred Heart vs. Ballard; 5pm @ Brescia Field
• Assumption vs. Christian Academy; 6pm @ Horton Field
• Scott County vs. Mercy; 6pm @ Brescia Field
