Tigers nab 21st state tennis title

LouisvilleCatholicSports.com chronicles the 2011-2012 sports year in review. We will bring you every sport, every season, every team’s results in a capsule each weekday until we're finished. From Cross-Country to Softball and all sports in between, here’s what happened in 2011-2012 on the Louisville Catholic sports scene.

For the 21st time in school history the St. Xavier Tigers took home top honors at the boys Kentucky State Tennis Tournament. The Tigers’ top two singles players, junior Sean Donohue and University of Louisville signee Alex Gornet, made it to the finals with Donohue getting the three-set victory.

St. X (6th Region) and Trinity (7th Region) won their respective regions and squared-off in 16 team state tournament with the Tigers prevailing 3-0 in their quarterfinal match-up. Here’s a look back on the state tournament and the results from the 2012 season.

St. Xavier – Kentucky State Champions – 21st title

With a clean sweep of the 6th Region tennis tournament, the Tigers were once again a favorite to win the team competition at the state tournament. Junior Sean Donohue defeated senior Alex Gornet in the singles competition of the regional final as well as the state championship final. Not only did the Tigers dominate the singles draw, both sets of doubles teams advanced to the championship of the regional and the semifinals of the state tournament.

Freshman Brandon Lancaster and junior Parker Thieneman defeated teammates junior Zachary Kuo and senior Joe Siami in the regional final. Kuo/Siami suffered a tough, 3-set loss to Trinity’s top doubles team of juniors Emerson Walsh and Randy Strause 5-7, 6-4, 6-4 in one semifinal. Lancaster/Thieneman were downed in the state semis by eventual state champions from KCD Collier Bouchillion and Matt Browne.

Donohue won the first set against Gornet 6-3, dropped the second set 3-6 and ran away with two breaks in the third set 6-2 to win the state singles title. Donohue won St. X’s first state singles title since 1997. Both players helped propel the Tigers to their fourth straight team state title, and their 21st team title overall, defeating Lone Oak by a 3-0 score.

Trinity – 7th Region Champions

The tandem of Emerson Walsh and Randy Strause made it to the finals of the state doubles draw by defeating St. X’s Zachary Kuo and Joe Siami in three sets, 5-7, 6-4, 6-4. The junior duo lost to KCD’s top doubles team of Bouchillion/Browne in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4 in the final, a reversal of the result from the 7th region tournament where Kuo and Siami were the victors..

The Shamrocks swept the regional competition with junior Tanner Love defeating freshman teammate Mustafa Gardezi in the singles draw. Walsh/Strause defeated Bouchillion/Browne in the doubles. But Love and Gardezi were unable to make the final four of the state tournament.
