Third annual All-Catholic football team

The LouisvilleCatholicSports.com All-Catholic Teams include and recognize student-athletes who played at the top level during the regular and postseasons within their sport. Players are selected based on nominations and feedback from the Louisville Catholic Sports Network staff that covered the teams during the 2012 season.

The 2012 football season was memorable for all four catholic schools. From Holy Cross leading future state champ Mayfield at the half in their playoff game to DeSales’ Cinderella run in the state playoffs and Trinity knocking off St. Xavier in the state quarterfinal enroute to its third straight state title.

Holy Cross’ football team struggled to find its footing early in the season, losing its first seven games, but  six of those  losses were against schools from larger classes. Senior running back Jordan Willenborg and quarterback Aaron Drury led Holy Cross to a 3-2 record against Class A competition.

The Cougars easily defeated Fulton County in the opening round of the playoffs. They led No. 1 Mayfield at the half in the second round but succumbed to the state powerhouse.

DeSales knew that its road in the state playoffs would be long and that it would not have a home game unless it advanced to the semifinals.

The Colts did just that, defeating Green County, Christian Academy and Glasgow on the road. With a state championship berth on the line, visiting Caldwell County ended DeSales’ run in Class 2A with a 43-31 victory.

Mike Glaser manned the sideline for St. X for the final time during the 2012 season. And those Tigers didn’t go down easily for their legendary coach of 31 years.

The Tigers easily defeated Tates Creek and Male in the first two rounds of the playoffs by a combined score of 121-27. In the quarterfinals, St. X and Trinity staged a battle befitting their longtime rivalry.

The Tigers earned a 14-0 lead with a strong first half, but then star running back Charles Walker was injured and the Tigers’ fortunes turned in the second half.

St. X didn’t trail until Trinity kicked a field goal to take a 15-14 lead in the third quarter. The Rocks held on to that lead to dim the lights on a great career for Glaser.

Everybody around the state predicted that Trinity would win a third straight state title. Little did they know that the Rocks would have to fight through some hardships along the way.

Trinity crushed Madison Central and George Rogers Clark in the first two rounds. In the quarterfinals, against archrival St. X, star wide receiver, James Quick went down on the Rocks’ first series. The Rocks trailed most of the game.

But a field goal midway through the third quarter gave the Rocks a thrilling win.

A week later, Trinity fought through adversity again with a come-from-behind win against Scott County, scoring three touchdowns in the final 7:49, with the winning score coming on Travis Wright’s 57-yard screen pass to Dalyn Dawkins with 0:31 left.

Unexpectedly, Quick returned for the state title game against Pleasure Ridge Park. He caught two 35-yard touchdown passes as the Rocks crushed the Panthers 61-7 for their straight Class 6A title.

And now, the 2012 All-Catholic team gathered from the votes of the Louisville Catholic Sports Network staff writers who covered the games. Both teams are listed in alphabetical order and are not position specific.
