Upcoming week for the Valkyries

Recent  results:

Signings: Four Sacred Heart seniors formally committed to continue their athletic careers at a ceremony at the school on Monday. Soccer players Corinne Peabody and Eleanor Gabriel signed with Fairfield University and Tennessee, respectively, while two members of the state champion field hockey team, Katherine English and Kristin Matula, signed with Davidson and Michigan State.

Basketball: The SHA varsity lost to Mercy 61-53 on Sunday despite winning the points off of turnover battle 18-12. The Valkyries’ ultimate downfall was free throws; the Jaguars completed 20 of 26 foul shots to Sacred Heart’s 13 of 19. Gretchen Samsel led SHA with 16 points.

The varsity took on Manual two nights later and lost 69-60 even though SHA outscored the Crimsons 36-26 in the paint. Free throws again were the Valkyries’ main struggle; they made 11 of 17 to Manual ‘s 21 of 31. Samsel  scored a game-high 20 points and was backed by senior Caroline Long (nine points) and junior DaiJia Ruffin (19).

Swimming: Six swimmers were honored at Senior Night, which was held during halftime of Sunday’s varsity basketball game: Kaitlin Diebold, Rachel Hill, Ali Nevius, Laine Poythress, Virginia O’Brien and Angelica Yun. Diebold was the only senior to participate in the regional win last weekend  and qualified to swim the 100-yard backstroke at the state meet next Friday and Saturday.

Coming up:

Basketball: The JV and varsity teams will play at Bullitt East on Friday night, Feb. 15. The JVs tip off at 6 p.m. and the varsity at 7:30. This is the last regular-season game before the district tournament starting next week.

Track: Sacred Heart will compete in the UK Indoor Invitational on Saturday.
