After five years of coaching his daughter Avery and the rest of the Sacred Heart Model School Bears, Shannon Weaver and his team gave their fans and parents a final game that culminated all the hard work he and his players have given over the those years.

The Bears went out on top Sunday as they defeated the St. Stephen Martyr Cardinals 41-13 at Trinity High School to win the CSAA’s 8th grade #1 “A” basketball title.

“Our team is a group of girls committed to basketball,” Weaver said. “These girls played year around together and have spent five years working on the fundamentals.”

The Bears showed their shooting fundamentals early in the game.

After trailing 2-0, Sacred Heart Model School went on a 12-0 run to end the first quarter. Avery Weaver, Maddie Pass and Sophie Call all hit outside jumpers in the first quarter.

The Bears then established a dominant inside game in the second quarter. Caylynn Brewer’s rebounding and post play helped the Bears take a 22-5 lead into halftime.

“They have to pay so much attention to our inside game that our outside shooters get a lot of easy looks,” Shannon Weaver said.

Brittney Just  scored all five first-half points for St. Stephen Martyr.

The Cardinals tried to fight back after the break, but Brewer scored six third-quarter points as the Bears padded their lead and cruised to victory.

Coach Weaver was filled with contrasting emotions after the game.

“A lot of emotion, happiness, days and work, but this is really what you want for your kids,” Weaver said. “It’s sad because I’m going to miss them, but now I can go be a fan in the stands.”
