The Bellarmine University softball team has been picked to finish fourth in the annual Great Lakes Valley Conference Preseason Poll for the 2016 season.

The coaches voted Missouri-St. Louis to repeat as GLVC Champions with the University of Indianapolis the second choice.

The Knights garnered 181 points in this year's poll, just eight points short of third-ranked Truman State University.  Bellarmine finished the 2015 season with a 32-16 record, going 20-8 in the GLVC.

Former All-American and All-GLVC first team member Ally Foster will lead the team along with 11 returning players.  The Knights are a young team with six freshmen joining the squad, two of which will be filling the catching spot vacated by Scarlett Powers, who was a four-year starter.

Head coach Renee Hicks, the winningest coach in program history, said she looks forward to seeing what this year's team can do.

"We have had three weeks of practice and really worked with (the freshmen) and the infielders," Hicks said.

Hicks said that last year's team seemed to be just one out or one hit away from finding success in the postseason.

"This team is one of the most unselfish teams, and they are so invested and committed to the concept of 'team,'" she said.

Teamwork will be necessary when facing conference opponents such as preseason favorites Missouri-St. Louis and Indianapolis.

These two teams battled for the GLVC title last May, with UMSL beating UIndy 4-0.  The Tritons have won the championship the past three years.
