The Bellarmine University men's soccer team's freshmen helped to ensure that Senior Day was a memorable one for the Knights' elder statesmen.

Freshman forward Tomas Bernedo and freshman midfielder Mark Lanham scored second-half goals to lead the Knights to a 2-1 victory over McKendree on Sunday at Owsley B. Frazier Stadium in Great Lakes Valley Conference play.

Bellarmine (6-7-4, 5-6-3 GLVC), which remained in the hunt for a GLVC Tournament berth, is on a five-match unbeaten streak. Sunday's contest with McKendree (3-7-4, 2-7-4) marked the team's regular-season home finale.

Bellarmine's three previous matches all ended in ties, but a big second half against the Bearcats prevented another deadlock. The Knights finished with a commanding 16-4 advantage in shots, including 7-3 on frame.

Bernedo struck first for Bellarmine. In the 57th minute, he made a run down the right side, cut left and sank a shot inside the far post from 20 yards. It was Bernedo's third goal of the season.

In the 81st minute, Lanham notched the first goal of his collegiate career, and it turned out to be the game-winner. From the center of the field, he ripped a shot inside the right post from 22 yards for a 2-0 lead.

With less than three minutes left, McKendree cut its deficit in half on a goal by Boris Kiesse, but the Knights pulled it out from there.

Bellarmine finishes the regular season with a match at Southern Indiana on Wednesday.
