Hyland's Heroes: Bill Young

Bill Young is a volunteer coach at St. Edward Parish in Jeffersontown and is married to Tina Fussenegger Young. The couple has three children – Sydney, who is a junior at Assumption and plays basketball and softball, Vincent Young who runs cross country and track and field and will be a seventh grader at St. Edward and Nicholas Young who plays baseball and will be a sixth grader at St. Edward.
What’s the connection with your faith and giving your time to student athletes?
I believe in teaching the young student athletes not only about their sport to advance, but in being a good person, student in school and to learn about their faith.
Who was the most influential person on your volunteer career? Why?
My father who was a high school teacher and coached for 48 years.
What are your major themes/principle as a volunteer?
I want to assist the kids in getting to the next level, it’s about the kids.
What does your role bring your family?
It takes balance and time management to be a coach, father and husband. We have three student-athletes of our own.
What are the fondest experiences or memories you have of your volunteer time?
Winning three Toy Bowls and seeing a number of those team members excel at the high school level and now college.
