ABOUT "HELP JOPLIN REBOUND"
LouisvilleCatholicSports.com is organizing a relief effort to collect sporting goods and athletic equipment for the youth of Joplin, Missouri through the inception of a drive called “Help Joplin Rebound.”
Just two weeks ago, Joplin was devastated by F4 and F5 tornadoes that claimed the lives of over 140 people and injured nearly 1,000. Reports state that up to 75 percent of the Joplin metro was damaged, including 7,000 structures.
Included in the damage were a number of schools that were destroyed, including the 2,000-student Joplin High and the local Catholic elementary school. Thousands of families are homeless and are now beginning the painful task of recovering from the devastation. While some families will be forced to relocate, many will be placed in FEMA trailers.
Over 10,000 children are victims of this tragedy. LouisvilleCatholicSports.com will be teaming up with collection partners in the area to collect new and slightly used basketballs, baseballs, bats and gloves, soccer balls, volleyballs, kickballs, frisbees, jump ropes, tennis balls, racquets, soccer nets, portable basketball goals, and more to send to the city of Joplin and the affected children on Friday, June 24.
“This horrific disaster will take the city of Joplin years to recover from,” said CatholicSportsNet President Steve Fehder. “The kids of Joplin are facing a trauma that has turned their lives upside down, and LouisvilleCatholicSports.com wants to provide help in bringing a little normalcy back into their lives.”
“With a long summer of unknowns ahead, we want to provide them some entertainment and means to stay active while outdoors,” Fehder continued. “While monetary donations and food, clothing and volunteers continue to make their way to the devastated area, this unique relief effort hopes to bring hours of joy and recreation to the youth of Joplin.”
Help Joplin Rebound, which is actively seeking partners and donors, will be collecting the aforementioned new and slightly used sporting goods and equipment over the next several weeks.
