University of Scranton soccer teams to raise awareness

The University of Scranton men’s and women’s soccer teams will take part in “Red Card Cancer” this Saturday, October 23, in conjunction with their Landmark Conference matches against Juniata College at Fitzpatrick Field.

The women’s match will begin at 1:00 p.m., followed by the men at 3:30 p.m.  Both matches are open to the public and admission is free.

All fans are encouraged to wear red to raise cancer awareness across the nation.  Fans will also have the opportunity to purchase Red Card Cancer t-shirts and bracelets, and donations will be accepted at the field to benefit the Sidney Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer Center at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland.

Saturday’s event will mark the second straight year that the Royal men’s and women’s soccer teams have taken part in “Red Card Cancer.”

The disease claimed the life of former University of Scranton women’s soccer coach Joe Bochicchio in July 2007.  A native of Scranton, Bochicchio served as head coach from 1984 through 2006 and led the Royals to 296 victories, including 15 Middle Atlantic/Freedom Conference titles (1986, 1989-1995, 1999-2004, 2006) and 11 NCAA Division III championship tournament appearances (1987, 1989, 1990, 1999-2004, 2006).  He is survived by his wife, Sandy, and sons, Matthew and Jeff, a four-year letterman on the Scranton men’s soccer team from 2006-2009.
