Puchalski, Schwalback earn GCAA honors

from Benedictine University athletics:

Benedictine University golfers Lori Puchalski and R.J. Schwalbach were recently named as recipients of Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA) awards.

Puchalski, a junior Biology major from Orland Park (Ill.), received the GCAA Kim Moore Spirit Award. The annual award recognizes a student-athlete or coach who exemplifies a spirit towards the game of golf, serves as a role model for her team and displays positive attitudes both on and off the golf course.

Puchalski, who is also active in Student Senate, had one top-five finishes and two top-10 finishes in eight events during the 2010 season. She also shot a season low 95 at the Benedictine Spring Invitational in early May.

Schwalbach received two individual honors. He was named to the Division III Cleveland Golf/Srixon All-American Scholars team, and was one of four finalists for the inaugural David Toms award.

The Division III Cleveland Golf/Srixon All-American Scholars team honors individuals who are juniors or seniors academically and have competed in at least two full years of collegiate golf. Nominees must participate in 70 percent of their team's competitive rounds, have a stroke average under 79 and maintain a minimum grade-point average of 3.2.

The Toms Award is presented to a men's collegiate golfer who has overcome adversity to achieve collegiate excellence.

Schwalbach, a senior Accounting major from New Berlin, Wis., was one of the more dominant golfers in the Northern Athletics Conference (NAC) this past year and had three top five finishes and eight top-10 finishes.
