Marquee coaches have plenty to scout in Las Vegas

The Adidas Super 64 in Las Vegas, NV is the type of festival where if you blink, you could miss something spectacular. High-flying dunks, alley-oops, long-range bombs, no-look passes and stutter dribbles are the rule here. One great play after another.

And it’s not just the players offering the interesting sights. It’s the coaches, too. Conversations among them often inspire schedule plans for future season or trade secrets that fans rarely get to hear.

Mark Few (Gonzaga), Steve Lavin (St. John’s), Phil Martelli (St. Joseph’s), Cameron Dollar (Seattle), John Thompson III (Georgetown), Buzz Williams (Marquette), Mike Brey (Notre Dame) are just some of the coaches in attendance representing Catholic colleges and Universities. They are all looking for the same things: talent. And there’s an abundance of it at this camp.

First day impressions include some strong performances from Michael Shaw of Chicago’s De La Salle H.S. The 6’8” forward has Georgetown on his short list of schools and would be a welcome addition to John Thompson III’s Hoyas.

Brandon Ashley (6’8, 220), a forward from Bishop O’Dowd High School, and Kyle Wiltjer (6’9, 210), a forward from Jesuit Portland High School, are actually teammates at this summer camp, playing for The Drew Gooden Soldiers and generating some buzz for themselves in first-day game action.

Finally, Gary Bell (6’1, 175), a guard and Gonzaga University commit, helped spearhead a supercharged attack for Seattle’s “Rotary” team.

We’ll have more from this tournament coming soon.
