Edgewood To Play First Match In A Decade
Eagles men's tennis is back on the court
It has been 10 years in the making, but the Edgewood College men’s tennis team will participate in their first event since 2000. The Eagles will play in the USTA/ITA Midwest Regional Tournament hosted by Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter, Minnesota.
Edgewood College last competed in 2000 before the program was dropped due to lack of interest by the student-athletes. That season the Eagles went 2-2 in the Lake Michigan Conference (LMC). The Eagles best season came in 1996 when they went 5-4, including 3-1 in LMC play, placing second in the LMC, their best finish in program history. John D’Orazio will be the first Eagle to take the court, playing in the singles draw versus Kyle Helgemoe of Hamline University. D’Orazio will also participate in the doubles draw with partner Cody Strebig. Partners Max Divelbiss and Tim Morgan will also compete in the doubles draw.
The Eagles are coached by Ben Oestreich who has been the head coach for the women’s program the last two seasons. In those seasons, he has led the Eagle to back-to-back Northern Athletics Conference titles. The last time Oestreich coach a men’s team was in the 2008-09 season at Wartburg College where he led the Knights to a school record 15 dual match wins.
