Lampa Named Big East Player Of The Week
Red Storm tennis sophomore earns conference honors
St. John's men's tennis sophomore Mike Lampa was named the BIG EAST Male Tennis Player of the Week, as announced by the conference office on Wednesday afternoon.
The in-season award is the first for Lampa and second of the 2011 campaign for the Red Storm. Junior Milo Hauk received the same award for the week of March 2-9.
Lampa helped guide St. John's (15-6, 3-1) to road wins over Villanova and Temple on Saturday, April 9, extending the Red Storm's winning streak to seven-consecutive matches and tying a program record with 15 wins in a season.
The New Jersey native went undefeated in singles play and 1-1 in doubles play this weekend. Lampa defeated Villanova's David Shaheen 6-2, 6-2 at No. 2 singles, before topping Temple's Dmitry Vizhunov 6-1, 7-5 at the No. 3 position. The sophomore recorded his lone doubles win in weekend play with teammate Stefan Bojic, an 8-6 decision at the No. 2 spot. With the wins, the defending BIG EAST Freshman of the Year improved to 15-6 in singles play and 11-9 in doubles.
Lampa has won 13 of his last 14 singles matches, including eight in a row.
Lampa and the Red Storm put its seven-match winning streak on the line and looks to top the program's single-season wins record on Monday, April 18, when it travels to Stony Brook, N.Y., to take on the Seawolves. Last season, St. John's defeated the non-conference opponent, 5-2. First serve is slated for 2 p.m.
