Catholic High Shines At Grizzly Track Relays
St. Joseph's Academy wins Meet's girls division
From Robin Fambrough, The Advocate:
There were some outstanding individual performances during Catholic High’s Grizzly Relays on Thursday.
Just as impressive were the collective performances of host Catholic and St. Joseph’s Academy. The teams combined to score a total of 3711/2 points, proving the value of combining a variety of performances.
The Bears scored 2021/2 points to finish ahead of Episcopal (100), Scotlandville (62) and Broadmoor (411/2) in the 10-team boys division. St. Joseph’s tallied 169 points to win the girls division with Baton Rouge Magnet High (120), Scotlandville (51) and Parkview Baptist (46) completing the top four in an 11-team competition at the Catholic track.
“It was just kind of a solid all-around performance,” Catholic coach Pete Boudreaux said. “We tried some different combinations for our relays and had some guys doing some things they haven’t tried before. They responded well.”
Catholic swept the relays, winning the 4x200-meter in 1 minute, 30.82 seconds, the 4x100 in 43.13 seconds and the 4x400 in 3:23.22. The Bears also placed first in six individual track events and two field events. The approach for SJA was quite different. Baton Rouge High swept the girls relays winning the 4x200 (1:43.39), the 4x100 (48.09) and the 4x400 (4:01.82) along with all the sprint events.
Led by double-winner Brianna Golden in the field events, the Redstickers took advantage of their strengths — field events, distance events. And like Catholic, SJA often placed more than one competitor in the top three.
“Our top people have improved,” St. Joseph’s coach Charles Daigle said. “But over the last month the biggest improvement has come from our No. 2 people in all events. They’ve gotten stronger and made us better.
“We’ve been pushing very hard. We wanted these last couple of meets to be confidence builders. Hopefully, they’ll have the confidence to know they can place in the top three a couple of weeks from now at regional.”
Baton Rouge High’s Dominique Brisco was the only competitor to win three individual events. The University of Houston signee helped lead the BRHS girls by winning the 100 hurdles in 14.4 seconds, the 300 hurdles in 44.73 and the triple jump in 38 feet, 2 inches.
“I was just trying to get familiar with this track again since it’s the first time we’ve run here this year,” Brisco said. “It’s about getting ready for district next week.”
Brisco’s younger sister, Mikiah, won two individual events, sweeping the 100 meters (12.06 seconds) and the 200 (24.60). Golden helped lead the way as St. Joseph’s piled up points in the field events. Golden won the shot put with a toss of 36-6 and took top honors in the discus with a 129-1 mark.
