Lancers march on in state tournament play

From Arizona Daily Star:

Ironwood Ridge and Salpointe Catholic had some double dominance going on Monday afternoon.  Both schools' boys and girls teams easily advanced to the second round of the tennis state tournaments.

The Lancers marched on in the 5A-I bracket, and the Nighthawks advanced in the 5A-II field.

At the Tucson Racquet & Fitness Club, Salpointe also had an easy time, as the boys blanked San Luis, 5-0. Matt Dunn and Brandon Gerber each posted 6-0, 6-0 wins. Andrew Dunn, Tyler Linscott and Alvaro Leon all won in straight sets.

"There was a little bit of a slow start, but they picked it up as we went on," Salpointe coach John Condes said. "We've been playing a lot of tennis lately, so we may have been a little tired.

The Lancers will face Phoenix Desert Vista at the Racquet Club on Thursday at 3:30 p.m.  The girls team cruised past Sierra Vista Buena 5-0 at the same venue. Courtney Amos, Lauren Amos, Claire Baxter, Nicole Whinery and Marilin Beard all won for the Lancers.

They will face Tempe Corona del Sol on Thursday.  Rincon/University and Sunnyside were both eliminated from the girls bracket.  Mountain View and Tucson didn't make it through on the boys side.
