Veteran coach earns milestone win with Cougars

April 23 is not a day Lake Catholic coach Dennis Woods is going to forget any time soon.

On April 23, 2001, Woods won his 500th career game. On Saturday, 10 years to the day of that milestone, the Cougars defeated Padua, 5-3, to give Woods his 700th career win.

Woods' career has had stops at Glenville (20 years), Cleveland Heights (three years), Case Western Reserve University (five years) and Cuyahoga Community College Metro (three years). Last Monday, Woods won his 600th career high school game, and on Saturday, it was another April 23 to remember in a span of over 40 years in the dugout.

"It is exciting," Woods said. "It's been a long career, and there were some lean years in there. But it's nice."

Senior right-hander Matt Clarke pitched a complete game for Lake Catholic. Danny Koller, Billy Salem and Adam Urbania each had two hits for the Cougars, who improved to 12-3 on the season.

Woods is 229-89 in his 12th year at Lake Catholic.
