No. 24 Toreros Win Eighth Straight Match
San Diego downs San Diego State 6-1 in tennis rivalry
The University of San Diego women's tennis team won its eighth-straight match by defeating San Diego State 6-1 on Wednesday afternoon from Hogan Tennis Center.
The 24th-ranked Toreros (15-4) avenged last year's 5-2 loss to the Aztecs (12-7). The Toreros got solid doubles play right out of the gate as Maja Sujica and Anna Depenau continued their solid play this season with an 8-3 win over Julia Trunk and Emma Cioffi that improved them to 13-2 on the year.
Josymar Escalona and Laura Claus mounted a huge comeback to clinch the doubles point for USD as they rallied back from being down 4-0 to eventually tie it at seven apiece against Julia Wais and Alicia Aguilar. Escalona and Claus took an 8-7 lead before Aguilar and Wais tied it back up at eight. Escalona and Claus then captured the tiebreaker 8-5 for their 15th doubles win of the year.
USD's top pair of Juliette Coupez and Stephanie Hoffpauir, currently ranked 63rd, held off a late run by No. 51 Roxanne Ellison and Sierra Ellison, who tied it at seven after being down 6-2. Coupez and Hoffpauir would pull out the 9-7 win to earn their third victory over a ranked opponent this season.
Singles play featured four-straight Torero points, led off by a win at No. 3 when Aguilar retired facing Claus with the score knotted at two. No. 75 Hoffpauir went on to notch a 6-0, 6-3 win over Trunk at No. 1 for her 12th singles win this season.
Clinching it for the Toreros on the day was Coupez, who cruised past Cioffi 6-1, 6-3 for her career-best eighth-straight singles victory. Sujica followed with a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 6 over Roxanne Ellison. The Aztecs posted their lone point of the day when Sierra Ellison defeated Depenau 6-4, 6-4 at No. 5.
Wrapping up the win for USD was Escalona, who earned a 6-4, 6-4 win at No. 2 over Wais. USD concludes the regular season this Saturday, April 9th, when they host Oregon at Hogan Tennis Center for a 10:00 a.m. match.
