Area sports information directors choose Villanova LAX standout

The Philadelphia-area Sports Information Directors (PhillySIDA) have voted Villanova men's lacrosse standout Brian Karalunas as the 2010-11 Overall Performer of the Year in its annual Academic All-Area program, as announced on Friday, July 1st.

In conjunction with the Philadelphia Inquirer, PhillySIDA names Academic All-Area teams in 24 different sports during the course of the academic year and has a Performer of the Year in each of those sports. At the end of the year, all of the Performers of the Year are put on a second ballot, and PhillySIDA members vote among them to determine a male and female Overall Performer of the Year.

Karalunas helped the Villanova men's lacrosse team to its second NCAA Championship bid in three years, and at the end of the season he became the program's first United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) first-team All-America selection. Karalunas was also this year's recipient of the prestigious Lowe's Senior CLASS Award.

He is a three-time All-America and a USILA Scholar All-America. Karalunas led the NCAA for the second straight year in caused turnovers per game (4.38), and graduates as Villanova's and the NCAA career leader in the category. He also finished his career ninth all-time at Villanova with 213 ground balls.

At the end of the year, Karalunas was named the American Eagle Outfitters BIG EAST Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year. An honors and philosophy major, Karalunas graduated with a 3.94 grade-point average.
